About Emergency Management
Phases of Emergency Management
Emergency Management is a continuous cycle of planning and action to ensure maximum safety to citizens. This is an all-hazards approach that allows cooperation between agencies in the event of any hazard or event. This cycle consists of four phases: Mitigation, Preparedness, Response, and Recovery.
Mitigation
Mitigation involves efforts to reduce or eliminate the impact of disasters before they occur. This includes long term strategies like enforcing building codes, creating flood zones, and educating the public on risk reduction.
Preparedness
Preparedness focuses on planning and preparing before an emergency happens. It includes developing emergency plans, conducting drills, training responders, and ensuring communities know how to act in a disaster.
Response
Response is the immediate action taken during and right after an emergency to ensure safety and minimize damage. This includes deploying emergency services, providing medical aid, conducting evacuations, and ensuring communication.
Recovery
Recovery involves restoring a community to normal (or better) after a disaster. It includes repairing infrastructure, providing financial assistance, offering mental health support, and helping residents rebuild their lives.
